The genius in Gilda's work, whether it be literary or visual art,is that it is able transform reflections of reality into an art form that does not violate the essence of truth.
A classic example of this is her much unclaimed work "A wilderneess of Sweet" which was about a young girl named "JOY"(about the age of twelve) who lived in a timed where World War II broke out.All the sweet inocence and idealism that the girl once held was slowly and paintfully shattered due to ther turmoils of war.And we find joy at the ending of thr story transformed from an inocent,
optimistics and idealistic girl sees tha wolrd as a "A Wilderness of Sweet" into a young adult (16years old) who is disheartened and made hard by fate and circumtance and finaly someone who sees the world not as "A Wildderness of sweet" but rather a "Wilderness of slaugther"
Her story "A Wilderness of Sweet" somehow refects her own experience as a young aristocrat girl
who experienced World War II.She had a deep well of personal experience to draw out her writing and art from.
Her writings are full of symbolism, one example of it is found in her story"A Wilderness of Sweet"
at the last where in just as the Americans ushers victory we find Joy,who is no longer an innocent girl, piching up a stick of gum this scene has a lot of depth and meaning. It some how symbolize of being immersed in a hard cruel environment of reality and yet holding in one's hand an escape to a place long forgotten by the passing of youth,a place where innocence dwells and optimism flourish,a place that once left can never be return to.
This touch of nostalgia, realia and symbolism in Gilda's work could simply put her among tha ranks og Nick Joaquin,Greg Brillantes and Cirilo Bautista just to name a few.
